Summer in Portland

After Chicago, we flew back to Seattle and drove down to Portland, OR. We needed to make up some funds, and thought it would be great to spend time with our dear friend Hilary and hang out in a great city at the same time. Portland IS a great city. We fell in love from the start, made some new friends, hung out in the sunshine and green spaces and ate some great food.

I got a great gig with a great little company, working on some fantastic social networking applications and a lot of custom Wordpress themes. We lived out in a RV park on Hayden Island, right on the great Columbia River dividing Oregon and Washington State. At night we heard the low moaning horns from the tug boats. We rode our bikes over the bridge, and gawked at Mt. Ranier on the horizon. It was a great summer. Here are some shots from a day at the zoo.

Um, yeah, there is a bald eagle in this shot, I swear.

Bike tour of Portland urban farms.

We met Stephanie when we visited her backyard on the tour, and her garden was the crown jewel. Chickens, immaculate beds, a great layout, a wide variety of produce, a calm space to hang out with friends, and amazing cooking — this garden will inspire me for years to come.

I was SO enamored with this hand cranked, hand built cider press. With it, Stephanie made lavender meade, the tastiest, most amazing beverage I have ever had the pleasure to drink. Someday, I'll make some with my own hand cranked cider press.

A handmade archway, fitted with a screen door. Love it!

Sunset on the equinox, the longest day of the year.

A photo with a new friend, Carol Joy.

Fourth of July at Dad's house in Washington! Mmm, grilled veggies!

B-ro, being silly and taking self portraits with my camera. I told you I would post this on the blog! :)

At a later visit, Dad took us out sailing. It was a gorgeous, sunny day — I love this cute photo of Deb napping in the sun.

Back in PDX, Hilary took us on a bike tour of her favorite spots in Portland. I snapped this cute shot of Deb and Hilary adjusting their helmets.

Hilary and Nate sold off a ton of their stuff in preparation for going to school in Rome. Yes, ITALY! They are there now, and Hilary sent me a postcard with her favorite pasta recipe. Can't beat the fringe benefits! Anyway, I raided the yard sale and have since made two killer purses out of Hilary's clothes.

Speaking of crafts... fat quarter produce bags! Stylin' at the supermarket.

A church pew. I seem to have a thing for photographing chairs. I should put them all in a series together.

Ok, I know, a random assortment of photos. And not a whole lot of coverage for two months of time. But it was a great time! Up next, the last leg of our journey — the trip south along the California coast to our new home in Berkeley.
